‘The most prevalent form of violence in society is domestic violence. That means that women are most at risk at home, in dependency relationships.’ From 25 November, Orange the World Netherlands is raising awareness about violence against women and girls. Worldwide, one in three women is confronted with physical, psychological and/or sexual violence.

‘We know that situations like break-ups can become dangerous. We have to be there when they do. I think many people don’t realise how widespread domestic violence is. It occurs in all layers of society. It could happen in your own circle too’, according to Janine Janssen, lecturer in Safety in Dependency Relationships.

Seeking help is best

‘We know that it usually takes a number of incidents before people seek help and admit that something is wrong. This is often because of shame. We feel we have to present an ideal image of our relationships and families to the outside world. It all has to be a storybook idyll, while all sorts of trouble could be happening behind the front door.

Many women are afraid of revenge or don’t know where to go for help. Or they may be economically, materially or emotionally dependent on their partner. But seeking help is best. You can go to the police, or to Veilig Thuis (‘Safe at Home’). In the interest of the victim but also that of the perpetrator. I don’t want to treat men only as the problem; they are part of the solution.’

Recognising and addressing violence

‘We will never be able to eradicate violence completely, but that doesn’t mean we should just accept it. As a researcher and police officer I think that together we must prevent the worst consequences. The role of academics is to serve society. Therefore, I think about how I can help and try to make things easier in practice by ensuring that police officers can properly recognise and address domestic violence.’

‘This type of violence occurs in the most important space in our society, the home. Your home should be a place where you can find shelter. That sense of safety is the basis. This is why this subject really affects me. If your home is not a safe place, where do you go to? A safe home is so important for a good life.’
