The ten main characters of the TV docuseries Blauw

The person behind the uniform. The new docuseries ‘Blauw’ shows how police work impacts police officers as human beings. Along with the exciting and challenging aspects of their work, the focus lies on the personal stories and emotions of the officers involved. You can watch the series on NPO1 from 3 January 2025.

The ten-part series, by the makers of the series Dienders (2019), follows various specialist police officers, but also several police students. So we follow Jip, Sanne, Gideon, and Alarik during their foundational police officer’s training. And we see May as she embarks on her training as an Incident Commander.

About Blauw

Drugs-related issues, aggression, racism, and the consequences of firearm use: this is all part of the hard reality Dutch police officers deal with on a daily basis. This new docuseries gives in-depth insight into the world of police work. Police officers working on the front line and behind the scenes show how their work impacts them as human beings. In addition to the challenging aspects of their work, the emphasis lies on the personal stories of officers who, time after time, pull on their uniform and step forward whenever they’re needed.

Police students

The series was recorded at various locations of the Netherlands Police Academy. Sanne and Jip, for instance, start their training at the Leusden campus, and we follow them during their introductory sessions and some of the early parts of their training: lessons at the shooting range, or on how to give someone bad news.

We also follow two other students, Gideon and Alarik. They are also doing their training in Leusden, but they’re already further along in their programme and are beginning to move into the real world of policing practice. We follow them as they do their first stints on the beat in Utrecht city centre.

The Police Academy’s Ossendrecht campus also features in the series. That’s where May, an officer with the Netherlands Police’s Limburg Unit, is doing her Police Incident Commander’s training. A Police Incident Commander plays a leading and coordinating role in major emergencies, such as serious road accidents.

When and where can I watch the series?

Blauw, an AVROTOS series, airs on NPO1 every Friday at 21:20 hrs, from 3 January 2025. From that date, it is also possible to watch the whole series on NPO Start.
